Research on language use in the advertisement of herbal medicines is quite uncommon. Presently, we do not know of any. This study investigates language use in selected samples of the advertisement of certain herbal medicines. The focus of the study is the functions of speech acts when selected (in terms of categories and frequency) and deployed to achieve intended communicative effects. Hinging on a two-fold theoretical framework (Acheoah’s [1] typology of locutionary strategies and Bach and Harnish’s [2] speech act taxonomy), this study finds out that: the advertiser’s illocutionary goals align with speech acts selection and sequencing; the language is captivating and persuasive; in conveying his message, the advertiser exploits natural human tendencies (aspirations, desires and aversions); and the message is situated in varied social, pragmatic and psychological contexts.

The purpose of this study is to examine Robert Browning’s poem “My Last Duchess” (1842) from a psychosocial point of view. It intends to analyze the poem using some concepts such as the rule of jealousy and possession pride, arrogance, and murder. The reason why the study chooses to use these particular concepts is that the psychosocial phenomena they represent play a major role in this poem. The main character in the poem can be considered to belong to these concepts. It led him to jealousy, which led to the commission of the murder. The researcher recommended that the psychological state of the psychopathic must be understood in order to avoid their violent behavior because they suffer from psychopathy due to social family problems and eventually led them to commit murder.

In Chinua Achebe’s magnum opus Things Fall Apart we see an authentic and objective presentation of the Igbo society. The ethnographic depiction of the Igbo life in the novel indicates that Achebe has tried to maintain his objective standpoint in dealing with various socio-cultural issues of the Igbo society. He has depicted these issues from the perspective of both an unbiased observer as well as an unprejudiced critic. The present study has shown to what extent and in which aspects has Achebe maintained his objective stance in depicting the pre-colonial Ibo society in respect of various socio-cultural mechanisms in the novel. To do so, firstly, this paper has presented the socio-cultural aspects like social administration, justice, respect for the elders, social status, rituals, communal harmony and unity etc. of the Igbo people in their real life already put forward by various researchers and anthropologists without considering the presence of their related contents in Things Fall Apart. Then, these real issues and their parallel presence in the novel have been presented side by side to see to what extent the scholars’ claims about various socio-cultural sides of the Igbo life are either agreed or refuted in the novel. Finally, these issues are thoroughly dealt with to discuss Achebe’s objectivity. The results show that the scholars’ claim about the socio-cultural realities of the Igbo possesses close proximity with those of the novel. The core idea of the findings is that Achebe maintains objectivity in presenting various socio-cultural sides of the pre-colonial Igbo society in Things Fall Apart without spoiling any literary grandeur of the novel.

This paper highlights the problems faced by women in 20th century by citing the examples from the novels of Mulk Raj Anand. The gender bigotry in the patriarchal society of colonial India, in particular, is deftly portrayed by Anand through his characters. The atrocities of the male characters like Reggie and the suffering of female characters like Sohini,Gauri,Rukmini allow the readers to get a realistic perception of the days of colonial era, particularly in the lower strata of society working in the tea plantation that were governed ruthlessly by the colonial representatives. The novels of Anand are a record of the social conditioning of the working class women and men of those days.

In reality a lot of anything-even a thought is essentially off-base.

This paper is essentially an appraisal of Lawal’s Communicative Model Theory within the purview of stylistics and pragmatics. Any investigation of the stylistic and pragmatic factors that motivate language use is inevitably immersed in language users’ supremacy over the normative properties of language. One of the factors that promoted scholarly interest in pragmatics is the possibility that significant functional explanations can be given for linguistic facts. Like any study in pragmatics, research in stylistics investigates contextual factors that inform language use; in this regard, the meaning of an utterance – not its grammaticalness – is the major concern. This paper hinges on The Pragma-crafting Theory as a theoretical framework and concludes that although the Communicative Model Theory is bedeviled by its inability to explain certain dimensions of language use, it captures the contextual underpinnings of language use.

This paper originally and substantially studies Nathaniel Hawthorne’s ‘The Birth-Mark’ from an ecofemninsit perspective, while exploring the interconnections and interdependency between the systematic and institutional ways in which woman and nature were dominated by male-centred society in 19th century America. By building on significant contributions to ecofeminist theory, this paper argues that the oppression of women and exploitation of nature by patriarchal culture and male-run institutions are represented in ‘The Birth-Mark’ as a product of masculinist, colonialist and capitalist assumptions and practices. This paper demonstrates that patriarchal culture’s unjust hierarchies and systems of domination are connected conceptually, and the promise of Aylmer to relieve Georgina from the corporeal crisis is an instance of difference-and-hierarchy-based domination; it aims at perpetuating the accepted authority and power of man who can contest God’s female terrain, and to claim his ability to recreate and reintegrate it in ways that show absolute control over nature and God.
